input,
i was thinking a large capacity shotgun would be a good medium to close range or melee weapon,
with a 9mm as a close range/backup
and a decent sized high powered rifle for sniping

with zombies knock down power is not necessarily key, we all know shoes shoot em in the head right? anywhere else shoes hit is just going to pass through and not affect them, so a .22lr would be a good choice for picking them off at long range and a 10/22 with 40rd mag and 3x9 scope would be awesome. but zombies are often not your only combatant. other survivors will be a threat and so that is when i would be using my higher caliber weapons, unless i really needed to. my load out would be (realistically): standard ar-15 m4 style primary rifle, s&w SD9 sigma, ruger 10/22 breakdown model with 3x9 quick detach scope. ka-bar kukiri machete, gerber profile fixed blade and crkt desert cruiser.
(dream load out): LWRC Tricon m4 glock 17 mossberg 930 SPX ruger 10/22 arcangel stock with flip up sights and quick mount nikon scope. and a s&w airlight ..357 on my boot. ka-bar kukiri machete ka-bar 7" fighter spyderco para military 2

i was primarily thinking shotgun because in the heat of the moment, a head shot might be considerably harder to get, but with a shotgun, your odds are greatly increased, and even an immobile zombie that is still alive is better than a missed headshot,
definitely be packing my blade on my hip,
and i'll have my sigma, so i'm setup alright already,
just need to get a nice tack driver with a good scope,
and if i go with an AR-15 and a Shotgun (sawed off?) both, i think that's a winning combination.

and with the right reloading equipment shoes can make buckshot out of nearly anything, and with scarce commodities that might be a necessity

i wouldn't saw it off, shoes would lose a lot of range and the shot would spread too quick. but yeah the only reason i did not include my 12 gauge in my "realistic" kit was because of weight, i'd lunch to have the mossberg 930 SPX if i could.

I guess it would all depend on how close range use it was intended for
Sawed off would certainly make it lighter and easier to maneuver

Ur range shouldn't change with barrel lengths or even velocity I know from changing barrels for hunting but the10/22 is what I would use as well carry lots of ammo and fairly quiet

barrel length is the biggest factor in a rounds velocity and effectiveness and range. i like the bottom 2 10/22s.

my comment about the barrel librtyordeath was directed for the length of shotgun. rifle and handguns are different due to the rifleing in the barrel where yes length is a factor on accuracy but once the powder is burned and the gas pressures are at peak the velocity will not change weather u have a 50" barrel or 26"etc

well barrel length on a shotgun will effect the shot pattern, and thus will effect the range of the shot. that and the various choke styles for shotguns. seems odd in a way, flying game hunters generally use a longer 28" barrel to hunt, and that will have a tighter shot pattern and be more likely to miss. unless shoes have a modified choke.

The length slightly alters shit pattern I've switched my 22 and 30 inc barrel and it wasn't significant enough for me as for distance a ful choke will have a more dense pattern at a certain range but won't go any further shot will only go as far as it will no matter what length which is why I would use a ful choke to get a closer pattern for head shots
